EDF Energy says shuts down nuclear reactors in Britain

EDF Energy, the British unit of French giant EDF, said on Monday it had decided to shut down four nuclear reactors at two plants in northern England as a precaution.

EDF Energy said it was shutting down two reactors at each of the Heysham and Hartlepool nuclear plants for at least about eight weeks.

It follows a defect at one of the four reactors, which has kept it out of action since June. The decision to shut down an additional three reactors was described as a "conservative decision" in a statement issued by EDF Energy.

It comes as Britain's government is placing nuclear power at the heart of its low-carbon energy policy, in stark contrast to Europe's biggest economy Germany, which vowed to phase it out in the wake of Japan's 2011 Fukushima disaster.

Last year, Britain signed a £16-billion deal with EDF to build two reactors at Hinkley Point C, southwestern England, to help meet the country's future energy needs.

Also involved in the contract are French group Areva -- the world's leading nuclear power company -- and Chinese nuclear firms CGN and CNNC.

EDF Energy meanwhile said in a statement on Monday that its Heysham 1 Reactor 1 "remains shut down while work continues to characterise the nature of the defect" detected earlier this year.

"Although routine inspections of other boiler spines have not previously indicated any similar defects, EDF Energy has taken the conservative decision to shut down Heysham 1 Reactor 2 and Hartlepool Reactors 1 and 2 that are of similar design," it said.

"Until the results of the further inspections are known it is not possible to advise exact return to service dates for these four reactors, however, an initial estimate is that these investigations will take around eight weeks," the statement added.

In a separate statement, British energy group Centrica said the shutdowns announced on Monday would impact its own earnings this year owing to its 20-percent interest in EDF Energy's existing nuclear operations.

"On this basis, the resulting reduction in output from the affected nuclear power stations is currently estimated to reduce Centrica's earnings per share in 2014 by around 0.3 pence per share," it said.

Centrica's share price was little changed following the announcement, with the company trading down 0.06 percent at 307.7 pence in London. EDF Energy parent EDF was also flat at 23.8 euros in Paris deals.

Beijing plans orderly migration of 100m farmers to cities

China's sweeping hukou reform will grant 100 million migrant workers equal access to urban social welfare by 2020, but many have started to wonder where the 100 million strong rural population will settle down.

Will they flock to already over-crowded mega cities like Beijing and Shanghai, where increasing population will further strain urban resources? Or will they become residents of China's smaller cities, which would be better able to accommodate them but provide fewer job opportunities?

The State Council, the Cabinet, issued the most comprehensive guideline for the newest reforms to the hukou or household registration system, on July 30.

To ensure orderly migration of the 100 million migrant workers, the guideline asks local governments to set differentiated household registration policies based on their ability to absorb migrants and provide public services.

Under the guideline, migrants can settle in towns and small cites with populations under 500,000 freely, with previous hukou restrictions abolished. For medium-sized cities with populations between 500,000 and 1 millon, however, controls have been set in hopes of establishing an orderly resettlement of rural population.

More conditions apply for big cities of with populations between 3 million and 5 million, and movement into cities with more than 5 million people will be strictly controlled.

Primary conditions include legally being employed at a stable job for a certain period and owning or renting a residence in the city they wish to move to.

China's hukou system is tied to one's place of residence and was set up in 1958 to control movement of rural population into cities. The hukou system has prevented the country's 269 million migrant workers from receiving the same public benefits as people with urban hukous and is felt to hold back the urbanization and domestic consumption that the government sees as China's growth engine for the future.

The new guideline says China will implement a single household registration, scrapping the nominal distinction between rural and urban hukou, but the benefits tied to hukou of different areas still exist with more developed areas providing better public services.

The differentiated hukou relocation policies are based on three socioeconomic factors, Huang Ming, vice minister of the Public Security Ministry, told Xinhua

After years of rapid urbanization, with 52.6% of the population living in cities last year, imbalances have arisen in the process. While more industrialized eastern areas are under increasing environmental strains, middle and western regions are still underdeveloped; the industrialization potential of underpopulated small cities have yet to be realized; and mega cities suffer from excessive populations, causing deteriorating "urban malaise" such air pollution and traffic jams.

For instance, migration has stretched Beijing's capacity to the extreme. According to official figures, Beijing's population increased by 87% from 1990 to 2011, reaching 20.18 million. Among the new residents, 7.42 million are migrants. The surge in population means Beijing now has to import its natural gas and fuel supply, as well as 64% of its power.

Wang Xiaoguang, an expert with the Chinese Academy of Governance, said differentiated policies could serve the goal of encouraging development of middle and western areas. At the same time, these policies are necessary, given the fact relocating to big cities costs much more.

After 15 years in the booming province of Guangdong, migrant worker Liu Yong finally decided to settle in Longshe township near his hometown in southwest Chongqing municipality. Liu, a former villager from Dadi village, bought a new house in the town in 2010 and relocated his hukou from his rural home to the town.

The reason for his move is simple. Settling down in the nearby town is affordable and allows him to live near his relatives. The same year, the housing price in Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong, soared beyond Liu's financial reach.

Chongqing, as one of the two pilot hukou-reform regions in China, abolished its hukou restrictions in 2010. So far, nearly 4 million migrant workers have relocated their household registrations to urban areas, with 70% of them choosing to settle in towns and small cities. This shows migrant workers are more likely to relocate to more livable and affordable small cities.

Zhang Xiaode, another professor with the Chinese Academy of Governance, said setting employment and residence requirements for hukou relocation can prevent rural populations from flooding into cities, which could cause slums and widespread unemployment in cities.

According to a survey, about 50% of China's migrant workers who have entered cities work in counties and small cities. Keeping this in mind, the government has planned to invest more in infrastructure in small cities so they can attract more migrant workers to settle down.

Hawaii braces for rare storms

Residents of Hawaii are bracing for a second rare tropical storm after power was knocked out to thousands of homes on Big Island. Hurricanes have hit the US' Pacific island group only three times since 1950.

The US National Weather Service urged Hawaiian residents to "keep on guard" in case Hurricane Julio changed direction. On Saturday, it was cruising about 750 miles (1,200 kilometers) east of the state's biggest island.

Julio was packing winds of 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour). Meteorologists said if it stayed on its route unchanged, it would weaken and lie about 300 kilometers north of the island chain on Sunday, local time.

On Friday, tropical storm Iselle - the first to hit the state in 22 years - downed trees, caused flooding and knocked out power to 21,000 homes, mainly on Big Island. Airlines canceled about 50 flights. Stores and schools were closed. No major injuries were reported.

Rain at least

After Iselle swept by, a tropical storm warning was kept in place for the island of Kauai, but canceled for Big Island, Oahu and Maui. Meteologists warned, however, that Julio could still bring a considerable amount of rain.

"Right now our guidance is indicating it's going to go north (of the state), but that can change and folks need to keep on guard," said weather service spokesman Mike Cantin.

Risky surfing

Lifeguards said a few surfers were braving waves at a Honolulu spot nicknamed "Suicides." Lifeguards on Oahu planned to respond only to emergency calls.

Meteorologist Anthony Reynes said waves on Hawaii's north- and east-facing shores could be between 3 and 4 meters (10 and 15 feet) high.

Storm damage prompted electoral officials to postponed voting for about 8,000 voters in Saturday's primary races to choose Democrat congressional and gubernatorial candidates for elections in November. Voting elsewhere in Hawaii would proceed, they said.

Chief election officer Scott Nago said the two precincts affected would vote later.

Japan bracing for typhoon

Southwest Japan was also bracing for a typhoon on Saturday, with more than 100,000 residents being advised to evacuate their homes.

Typhoon Halong has already brought disruption to outer areas, forcing the cancelations of hundreds of flights and stranding many summer vacation passengers.

The typhoon was projected to make landfall on the southwest island of Shikoku late Saturday. It was lashed by downpours last weekend.

Officials have warned that Halong could trigger landslides and flooding.

NASA: New "impossible" engine works, could change space travel forever

Until yesterday, every physicist was laughing at this engine and its inventor, Roger Shawyer. It's called the EmDrive and everyone said it was impossible because it goes against classical mechanics. But the fact is that the quantum vacuum plasma thruster works and scientists can't explain why.

Shawyer's engine is extremely light and simple. It provides a thrust by "bouncing microwaves around in a closed container." The microwaves are generated using electricity that can be provided by solar energy. No propellant is necessary, which means that this thrusters can work forever unless a hardware failure occurs. If real, this would be a major breakthrough in space propulsion technology.

Obviously, the entire thing sounded preposterous to everyone. In theory, this thing shouldn't work at all. So people laughed and laughed and ignored him. Everyone except a team of Chinese scientists. They built one in 2009 and it worked: They claimed they were able to produce 720 millinewton, which is reportedly enough to build a satellite thruster. And still, nobody else believed it.

Now, American scientist Guido Fetta and a team at NASA Eagleworks—the advanced propulsion skunkworks led by Dr Harold "Sonny" White at the Johnson Space Center—have published a new paper that demonstrates that a similar engine working on the same principles does indeed produce thrust. Their model, however, produces much less thrust—just 30 to 50 micronewtons. But it works, which is amazing on its own. They haven't explained why their engine works, but it does work:

Test results indicate that the RF resonant cavity thruster design, which is unique as an electric propulsion device, is producing a force that is not attributable to any classical electromagnetic phenomenon and therefore is potentially demonstrating an interaction with the quantum vacuum virtual plasma.

The entire idea that we have found something that seems to go against the the principle of conservation of momentum just seems crazy to me. But the fact that it has worked for two independent parties can't be denied. That's the laboratory speaking. Then again, perhaps both labs made a mistake. I'm sure this will be tested by the Russians and the Europeans too, but at least I'm glad we are working on it.

But the fact that we may be witnessing something completely new, something that may push us forward into sci-fi territory once again, is very exciting.

Greetings, dear ones, I am Kryon of Magnetic Service. Approximately three hours ago, I gave information to my partner about the subject of tonight's channelling. I always like to warn him in advance if we're going to have a science channelling. This is a test for him, to see if he can avoid being nervous. So, indeed, this channel is about physics. It's not going to be a very long channel, but it's going to be remembered. I have selected this time in this place [Moscow] to give this information.

There are always those who would ask, “What does this have to do with my spirituality? Why does an angelic form come in and then talk about science?” Before I am done with this information, I think you'll know. Dear ones, are you really willing to separate physics from God? Is the bias of your three-dimensional existence so structured that you would leave God out of creation? Of course not. But when we start to put these together, there are some who are not interested in the scientific portions. So we're going to make it simple.

My partner often becomes nervous in these discussions because his background does not include physics. So each time we begin to speak of these things, he thinks he's out of his league [not trained]. He is far more comfortable speaking of things of the heart. When we speak of the love of God and the personal attributes of love that each Human has, my partner sees and feels it. He knows it and experiences it. But when we start talking about atomic structure, he gets nervous.

What do you know about physics? Most of you will say, "Very little", but for some of you, "Quite a lot". So for most of you, let us simplify and demystify the attributes of what we will speak of tonight. Physics is the way physical things work in your reality. So up to now, it has not encompassed more than that. For instance, you don't have a segment for spirituality in physics, and in all fairness, you have yet to see a correlation for this. So there are no classes for that in your schools. In the "boxes of study", your institutions separate chemistry and life science from physics, but here will come a time where the very center of all learning boxes will start with physics, because eventually it will be the common denominator for everything.

I would like to attempt in these few moments to present to you the potentials of your physics discoveries for the next 300 to 500 years. These things happen slowly for you, and right now you think that is a long time, dear ones. However, the lifespan of a single Human Being in what we would call the first-world countries of health is creeping toward an average of 80 years. If you take an 80-year life, how many of those would you have to live to make approximately 300? The answer is less than what you would count on one hand. So in those terms, it's not really that long, is it? Four lifetimes for you. So let me tell you what may occur in that span of time, or what you you might see only returning three more times.

You've heard of quantum physics? Let us simplify that and not use the quantum that often. Instead, let us substitute multidimensional physics. So today, most of your physics is single-dimensional physics, up to four dimensions. You live in four (even though you call it three), and it is your common reality - linear 4D physics. The quantum physicists' work beyond the four with multidimensions. Simple. So right now, as you sit here, you're used to certain kinds of things and the way they work. This is about to change.

I'm going to present to you four major discoveries to come, and I'm going to simplify each one so that anyone can understand them. I won't go into the technical minutia of them or the hard science of them. Instead, I'll explain the concepts of them.

Intelligent Design: A New Premise

My partner [in his lecture] mentioned a physicist and astronomer who has looked at the development of life in general and the evolution of the Universe, and he realized it could not have happened in the way you were told [random chance]. The math overwhelmingly proves this new discovery and the statistics of it happening through chance are off the charts. More and more, scientists will start to realize this. At every stage of the evolution of your Universe, your galaxy and all planets and life, there will be a realization, from the staggering statistics alone, that there had to be a design or bias. Therefore, the term that was used, intelligent design, actually represents a future discovery. We'll talk about that one later.

The ones who visit you from other star systems are smiling, for they know what I'm about to tell you. The "hidden physics" is the basis of their ability to travel and be here. It is also the basis for their ability to have enlightenment. You see, it's multidimensional physics and it is the core of their reality and spirituality. They also know that you won't understand most of it, since it is beyond what you currently will allow yourself to perceive as truth. Where do I begin?

The Quantum Lens

Let us begin with what I have told you before. The first major discovery, which is not that far away, is what I have been talking about for two years. It is an idea that is not new, and it's the ability to see and measure quantum energy. Let us rephrase that. It's the ability to clearly see and measure patterns in multidimensional physics. As soon as you get out of four dimensions [your reality], the perception of it is like a non-defined swirling bubble of things that don't make linear sense - and it's very confusing to anyone who simply wants to stay in 4D. Can you imagine seeing things behave in ways that are "impossible"? This would be a multidimensional reality. The brain must get used to this, and it will. Imagine telling a citizen living in New England only 200 years ago that eventually they could throw voices and moving pictures through the air, and the entire world could hear and see them instantly. Today, you are not impressed by that, for it is your reality. But they would not even believe it, and you would be considered unbalanced! It simply wasn't in their perception of reality for what they were used to. 

Human Beings want to count the dimensions. They see many potentials, and they group them into boxes with numbers attached. Now, this is a linear concept and not accurate at all for multidimensional future thinking. However, it's fine to do it, for it suits your "physics comfort level". It helps you to identify the energies that you're feeling and helps you to compartmentalize things. But the truth is this: When you get past four dimensions, everything that follows modifies itself constantly. It's all dynamic, so it may seem uncomfortable for those who need consistency of linearity. It is not linear and it is not countable [you can't count dimensions past the four linear ones you have]. It is a soup of dimensional energy that is constantly changing and interactive with itself. You will eventually see these energies as "quantum patterns".

These quantum or multidimensional patterns will be seeable with an instrument that will be designed with a quantum lens. This will involve what we will call cryo-energy. This is the technology of super-cooling and we've said before that the science of super-cooling has the potential to allow this invention, and the actual lens will be made of plasma. Now, this is part of what we have discussed before, so it's not new. What is new is that we are putting these things together so you'll see a better flow of what is coming and why.

Why is this invention so important? Let us reveal yet again that when this invention happens, this quantum lens, it will not simply be used for physics. It will actually start with astronomy. But eventually, when it is smaller and when it is turned to look upon life, science will see quantum patterning everywhere! Humanity will see it in all of nature and it will be seen in the Merkabah of the Human Being! Imagine seeing an 8-meter wide quantum patterning around each Human! Can you see the beginning of some new, basic science questions? "Is it life or physics? Do we have to re-define life?"

Two More Laws

The ability to see quantum patterning will lead to the second major discovery in physics - the discovery of two more laws. Those laws, as we have told you, are a strong and weak multidimensional force. This will bring the laws of known physics to six (you only have four now) and will bring the concept of multidimensional laws into being. These missing laws will begin to explain a current mystery - missing energy in the cosmos. It's also the beginning of understanding spirituality in physics, but that's going to be later.

These two new laws will finally give a full explanation of the energy you see in the Universe and in your galaxy. Now, I'm going to give you some information that we have not really explained before. You tend to use the word Universe and galaxy as the same; they are not. The physics in your galaxy is not necessarily the physics in all galaxies. Therefore, my advice to you is to constrain your knowledge and your study to your own galaxy. Believe me, there is plenty to see here!

What do the two new laws bring you? The first is the explanation of what dark matter is in the vastness of space. Multidimensional energy is powerful, but it does not match linear models. In the past, the dark matter attribute was seen to be vast energy [based on what it did to things around it], but it was mislabeled as part of a Newtonian 4D-based system, and it's not. It is a nonlinear system that is part of multidimensional physics. The multidimensional part of the atom is not yet understood. There is energy there, tremendous energy, and the truth of it will explain that which the astronomers see in the sky as dark matter.

The second thing will be the acknowledgement that these two new laws of physics will finally bring you what you have always wanted - Free energy. You have known it intuitively, have you not, that the energy you create on the planet is accomplished in an archaic way? Digging into the earth to burn things for heat is archaic. Everything is about heat, isn't it? Everything is about creating motion with heat, isn't it? These are the things that you understand to make energy. I'm going to make a statement. Everything you think you know about energy right now will someday look like the time when you invented the wheel or even fire. It's that archaic! When you unlock that portion of multidimensional physics, you'll be able to create unlimited energy in a very refined way, without explosions or heat.

Now, there are those who would say that certain inventions on the planet right now have already done that. Not even close! Believe me, not even close. You don't understand the finesse of how to tap into multidimensional forces. You don't have the instruments and you can't see what you're doing yet. You're simply not there yet. "But Kryon, we know how to unlock the energy of the atom. We have nuclear power." [Kryon laugh] Really? You know what nuclear power is? It is a controlled explosion so that you can make heat! It's not elegant, it's dangerous to you, and there are byproducts that can hurt Human Beings. Is this your idea of a good thing? Just think: It's controlling a very dangerous explosion to make steam - the world's most expensive steam engine! Nuclear power. You have no idea.

Let me give you an example of this. Let's say that someone on another planet discovered a piano (pretend with me). They discovered that it could make a very interesting sound. Let's say that this sound was new to this space creature that had discovered it and he found that he could really make this fun sound happen if he pushed the piano off the second floor of a building! The crashing noise, and all of the strings breaking, made music. That's nuclear power. You don't have the elegance to know how to play the keys of the atom. You don't know how to find the multidimensional vibrations that work together, which slowly and elegantly release as much energy as you'll ever need - a concerto of coordinated energy! Now listen, because here's a hint for a physicist who will read this message in the future: You're not going to release energy to make heat. Instead, you're going to make energy that pushes objects around. You will be controlling mass! Imagine that.

Coherence with Create Source

The third discovery will be what I call coherence with the creative source. It's the attitude of benevolence in creation - intelligent design and more. It's in atomic structure. It's "God in the atom". It's a discovery that will be so profound that it will rock the religions of the planet, and not in a negative way, for God will simply get bigger for everyone.

The discovery that God literally has a part in physics will be provable. Coherence with the creative source creates a benevolence in the way physics works. Physics with an attitude! There will be acknowledgment of divinity in matter. Oh, this is just the beginning! I can't tell you when it's going to happen, for this is the beginning of proof of God in everything.

"Kryon, is that going to upset organized religion?" No! It's going to bring it together. The planet is already a monotheistic planet - one God. In all of the doctrines in all of the religions, one God. You're very ready for what comes next. Religions all over the planet already acknowledge creation from one God. This will be music to their ears! The proof of God in all matter will not upset spirituality, but rather it will bring it together. There will be commonality to celebrate and doctrines will slowly change. Commonality and synchronicity of belief. You see? Now, before this can happen, however, there must be a coherence with each other. These things will not occur while you are still killing each other and hating each other on a large scale. But then, you knew that, didn't you?

What happens to Human Beings when they have nothing in common? They tend to separate and even war with each other. What happens to Human Beings who find they all have something in common? They tend to unite, share resources, and celebrate what they have. Do you see how this might affect planet Earth? Do you see how this might affect you? Old soul, this is what you've been waiting for. Did you really expect it might come from physics? It will! Why wouldn't it? Why wouldn't it? If the study of all things and how they worked revealed God in everything, wouldn't it unite? It makes sense. The common denominator for all things is love.

The Physics of Consciousness

The fourth major discovery on the planet will be the one that happens perhaps last. It will be the realization that Human consciousness will be an attribute of multidimensional physics. Human consciousness, that elusive energy, will be seen as multidimensional quantum physics, with laws and rules that can be understood, applied, and used.

Do you see how far you can go? Do you see what the Pleiadians have done already? Do you understand why those from the stars will stand back and wait until you discover the things they know? They are not going to give them to you. With free choice, you have to make these discoveries into your reality. But the potentials are already there. These new discoveries in physics have been waiting for you, but you had to pass the marker of the precession of the equinoxes. This was the marker that indicated you had passed an old energy and were able to start a process of solving Earth's problems. This would include the potential to actually change Human nature, allowing for very little propensity for war.

We have told you before that there will be a flurry of old versus new energy and smallish wars all over the planet between both old historic enemies and old historic consciousness. It's after these have finally been settled that these discoveries will take place. Don't worry about the timing, since often an older generation with old ideas has to leave to allow the clearing for the new. We've said it before. The reason why these inventions can only be given to you in a new energy is because with a more mature Human nature, you won't have the propensity to weaponize these things! Instead, you will have the propensity to find out how they can feed you and clothe you and create energy for a population that has decided to live side-by-side in cooperative tolerance.\

It's beautiful, isn't it? If you could ask a Pleiadian, they would tell you what it's like to have these things and draw them right out of the atom, including the benevolence of God.

Finally, you'll also have to look at chemistry as a branch of physics. After all, all chemicals on the planet, all substances on the planet, follow the laws of physics. The quantum lens will show multidimensional life in all things, so the chemistry of biology will follow new physics rules. DNA is very special. It is a combination of all the sciences on the planet. It has multidimensional attributes; it is quantum and it has the seeds of the creative source within it. It locks into its memory all that you ever were and will be. It is the most complex multidimensional creation on the planet and, eventually, you will make another discovery - coherent DNA.

Ah, the doctor wants to know [referring to Dr. Todd Ovokaitys, who is present] what this is. Coherent with what? "You can't leave it like that, Kryon. You can't say coherent DNA without labeling what it is coherent with." So I will reveal a little of what he has already seen in his work. Multidimensional DNA, if it has coherence with certain specific dimensional attributes, will create what you see as magic! You would call it magic because you will see Human DNA start to seemingly evolve. The differences literally will extend life up to four-fold. The difference between DNA working at 30 percent and 90 percent is a dimensional alignment that we will call coherent DNA. Some of the world’s top PR companies have for the first time publicly ruled out working with climate change deniers, marking a fundamental shift in the multi-billion dollar industry that has grown up around the issue of global warming.

Public relations firms have played a critical role over the years in framing the debate on climate change and its solutions – as well as the extensive disinformation campaigns launched to block those initiatives.

Now a number of the top 25 global PR firms have told the Guardian they will not represent clients who deny man-made climate change, or take campaigns seeking to block regulations limiting carbon pollution. Companies include WPP, Waggener Edstrom (WE) Worldwide, Weber Shandwick, Text100, and Finn Partners.

“We would not knowingly partner with a client who denies the existence of climate change,” said Rhian Rotz, spokesman for WE.

Weber Shandwick would also not take any campaign to block regulations cutting carbon emissions or promoting renewable energy. “We would not support a campaign that denies the existence and the threat posed by climate change, or efforts to obstruct regulations cutting greenhouse gas emissions and/or renewable energy standards,” spokeswoman Michelle Selesky said.

“There may be scenarios in which we could represent a client that has different views on climate change, just not on this issue.”

The UK-based WPP, the world’s largest advertising firm by revenue and parent company of Burson Marsteller and Oglivy Public Relations, said taking on a client or campaign disputing climate change would violate company guidelines.

“We ensure that our own work complies with local laws, marketing codes and our own code of business conduct. These prevent advertising that is intended to mislead and the denial of climate change would fall into this category,” the company said.

However, Fiona McEwan, a spokeswoman for the company, said the 150 companies within WPP made their own decisions on clients and would not rule out campaigns opposing regulations to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The US-based Edelman, which is the world’s largest independently owned PR firm, did not explicitly rule out taking on climate deniers as clients.

“Expanding the dialogue in a constructive manner, and driving productive outcomes to solve energy challenges are the key criteria for evaluating client engagements,” said spokesman Michael Bush.

He said Edelman takes on clients on a case-by-case basis.

The PR firms were responding to surveys conducted independently by the Guardian and the Climate Investigations Centre, a Washington-based group that conducts research on climate disinformation campaigns. This could have a knock-on effect on the advertising and lobbying campaigns targeting Barack Obama’s regulations limiting carbon emissions from power plants, and the international negotiations for a climate change treaty, now entering a critical phase.

“The PR industry is a major component of the influence peddling industry that stretches across Washington and the world, and they are making large sums of money from energy companies and other important players that have businesses connected to fossil fuels and energy policy,” said Kert Davies, the founder of Climate Investigations.

Davies said his group took on the research to try to get a better grasp of the mechanics behind the framing of messages on climate change – and the disinformation campaign.

Over the past few years, environmental groups and scientists have been looking more closely at the messaging around climate change, in part to examine their own failings to build broader public support for action.

In the process, PR firms have grown even more influential in shaping the debate around climate policy, said James Hoggan, who ran his own public relations firm in Vancouver and founded DeSmogBlog, a blog that describes itself as “clearing the PR pollution that clouds climate science”.

“I think that public relations people are right at the elbow of powerful people in industry and government,” he said. “You are an insider – a very trusted insider – and you can have a huge influence. It really does matter. These are influential organisations.”

Some of the firms, such as Finn Partners, have a strong reputation for taking on environmental causes. “Finn Partners would not work on any campaigns that deny the reality of climate change nor would we take on a campaign that would obstruct regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or renewable energy standards,” said managing partner Peter Finn.

WE said it had worked on campaigns to expand production tax credits for wind energy. Oglivy Public Relations told CIC that it recognised the risks of climate change, and that it had worked on campaigns for WWF and Greenpeace. But it declined to comment on whether it would represent clients that deny climate change. Qorvis, a Washington DC-based PR company, and its parent company MSL Group, also declined to answer that question.

Other companies however appear concerned with trying to represent environmental campaign groups as well as industry, according to Davies.

Only 10 of the 25 firms responded to multiple emails, phone calls and certified letters from the CIC, either directly or through a parent company.

Firms that refused to comment include those that have worked for groups calling for action on climate change – as well as those seeking to block those efforts.

Hill & Knowlton, for example, was hired as the official media sponsor for the United Nations climate conference in Copenhagen in 2009. The company declined to respond to the CIC survey.

Several of the companies, such as WPP, WE, Oglivy, and Edelman have ambitious in-house programmes for reducing their carbon footprint. Qorvis Communications , a subsidiary of Publicis Groupe, said it had been calculating its carbon footprint since 2009.

But even those firms with robust internal carbon accounting systems, such as Edelman, were reluctant to go on record.

Edelman’s client list includes the American Petroleum Institute, the main energy lobby,which opposes Barack Obama’s climate change agenda. Edelman also carried out campaigns supporting the Keystone XL pipeline, a proposed pipeline to carry tar sands oil from Canada to refineries on the Gulf coast of Texas.

An initial response to CIC from Edelman inadvertently included an internal email which said: “I don’t believe we are obligated in any way to respond. There are only wrong answers for this guy.”

Edelman did in the end respond to the CIC and the Guardian.

Other firms said they had signed on to the United Nations global compact on sustainable business. However, the compact does not explicitly commit companies to policies on climate change.

Seven of the firms told the researchers their companies saw climate change as a threat. But a smaller number would rule out taking on clients that deny climate change is occurring, or work on campaigns that seek to block policies to deal with climate change.

“For the majority of them, they would rather remain neutral on any issue,” Davies said. “They don’t want to have positions on anything because they like to keep options open to take on any client who walks in the door. They pretend they are above the fray and they are not involved, and yet they are the ones designing ad campaigns, designing lobbying campaigns, and designing the messages their clients want to convey around climate change.”

The Climate Investigations Centre sent out surveys in April to the world’s top 25 firms asking them to go on the record about their views on climate change.

The short survey asked:

• Does your company acknowledge the threat and challenge of climate change as companies like Walmart, CocaCola, Apple, Google, AIG, Swiss Re, NRG, Unilever and others have done?
• Does your company have any internal carbon accounting policies or energy use reduction targets? Have you taken actions to reduce your “carbon footprint”?
• Does your company have an internal Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy regarding climate change or the environment generally?
• Has your agency advised any client corporations on communications around CSR programmes with a specific climate change focus, or on other climate change related public relations efforts?

The Guardian followed up by asking firms if they would take on clients that deny the existence of man-made climate change or campaigns seeking to block regulations dealing with climate change.

China expands world's deepest "dark matter" lab

China has begun expanding the world's deepest underground lab in southwest China's Sichuan Province, where scientists have been conducting experiments on mysterious "dark matter."

The second-phase construction of the Jinping Underground Laboratory, located at 2,400 meters under the surface of Jinping Hydropower Station, was launched on Friday by Tsinghua University and Yalong River Hydropower Development Company, the university told Xinhua on Saturday.

The construction, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015, will increase the lab's space to 120,000 cubic meters, allowing more experiments to be carried out simultaneously, the university said.

The Jinping lab, opened in Dec. 2010, provides a "clean" space for for scientists to pursue the invisible substance known as dark matter. Researchers said the extreme depth helps block most cosmic rays that mess with the observation.

The lab has accommodated a project called China Dark Matter Experiment, whose results were published in scientific journal Physical Review D in 2013.

Scientists are still searching for evidence to prove the existence of the hypothetical dark matter, which account for over a quarter of the universe's mass-energy balance but have not been directly detected.

In that state, there is no time or distance. The change of consciousness on this planet has changed the center of the galaxy. This is because what happens here, dear one, is "known" by the center.

It's interesting to us what your reaction to all this is scientifically. You saw that the "creative event" of your Universe is missing some energy in order for it to have formed as it did. In addition, the unusual way the galaxy rotates, as I just stated, was also noted. So you have calculated that for all this to be in place, there has to be missing 3D matter, and you have given it a name - dark matter. How funny! Did you ever think that there could be a multidimensional effect going on that you now can observe and calculate - that has immense power, but can't be seen? It's not "matter" at all and it's not 3D. It's quantum energy.

Mystery Behind Giant Hole in Siberia Clearer as 2nd Discovered

Reindeer herders in Russia's Far North have discovered yet another mysterious giant hole about 30 kilometers away from a similar one found days earlier.

Located in the permafrost of the subarctic Siberian region of Yamal, which means "end of the earth" in the local Nenets language, both craters appear to have been formed in recent years and have icy lakes at their bases.

Scientists who examined the first hole theorized that it could have been created when a mixture of water, salt and gas exploded underground, the Siberian Times news site reported.

The area, which has one of Russia's richest deposits of natural gas, was covered by sea about 10,000 years ago, and vast salt deposits were left behind.

"Global warming, causing an alarming melt in the ice under the soil, released gas causing an effect like the popping of a Champagne cork," the news report said, citing an expert at the Subarctic Scientific Research Center.

The first hole is estimated to be about 50 meters wide and 70 meters deep, with water from melting permafrost cascading down its sides into the icy deposit below.

The second hole is "exactly" like the first one, but "much smaller," local lawmaker Mikhail Lapsui told the Interfax-Ural news agency. "Inside the crater itself, snow can be seen."
