Forget windmills: biggest Dutch solar farm to be built near Delfzijl

The biggest solar farm in the Netherlands – covering more than 60 football fields – is to be built in Delfzijl in the far north of the country. 

The financing of the project, first mooted in 2014, has now been finalised. In total, 123,000 solar panels will be placed at the site, currently empty land next to an industrial estate. 

Total investment in the project, which will also receive government subsidies, is put at €30m. 

The solar farm, a joint venture between Groningen Seaports, Sunport Energy and German financier and builder Wirsol, will generate some 30 megawatts of power a year. Most will be used by local industry.
