From the
department of "How hasn't this happened yet?" an embassy will hold an
event where cicadas are served later this month.
The Embassy
of the Netherlands will hold a discussion about insects as a sustainable food
source on June 26, The Washington Post reports. The 4 p.m. discussion will be
followed by a tasting menu of, cicadas, mealworms, and crickets.
Daniella
Martin, the host of Girl Meets Bug, an Internet series about insects, will
speak at the event and prepare the critters for consumption. Other speakers
include University of Maryland professor Michael Raupp and Marcel Dicke, an
author of bug cookbook Het Insectenkookboek. (An English version, titled The
Insect Cookbook, will be released this fall.)
“Insects
could provide a nutritional alternative for people without the massive use of
natural resources," Ambassador Rudolf Bekink said in a news release. They
also provide a chance for the unadventurous eaters out there to say "ew,
ew, ew" when a bug is served to them.
Those
unable to attend the event may follow along on Twitter using the hashtag
"#BugAppetit" because this is the world we live in.
