We speak yet again about geothermal, about tidal, about wind. Again, we plead with you not to over-engineer this. For one of the things that Human Beings do in a technological age is to over-engineer simple things. Look at nuclear - the most over-engineered and expensive steam engine in existence!

Your current ideas of capturing energy from tidal and wave motion don't have to be technical marvels. Think paddle wheel on a pier with waves, which will create energy in both directions [waves coming and going] tied to a generator that can power dozens of neighborhoods, not full cities. Think simple and decentralize the idea of utilities. The same goes for wind and geothermal. Think of utilities for groups of homes in a cluster. You won't have a grid failure if there is no grid. This is the way of the future, and you'll be more inclined to have it sooner than later if you do this, and it won't cost as much….”

3D printing technology used in Chinese fighter jets

Want China Times, Staff Reporter 2013-05-31

China is employing 3D printing technology in the development of its military aircraft, from the J-16 fighter to the next-generation J-31, reports Huanqiu, the Chinese-language website of the nationalistic tabloid Global Times.

At this year's annual legislative and consultative conferences in Beijing this march, J-15 chief architect Sun Cong revealed that 3D printing has been widely used in designing and producing the latest carrier fighter prototype which had its first successful test in October.

The rapidly improving technology, which has allowed the development of Chinese fighter jets to take off, so to speak, has been used to manufacture critical titanium alloy load-bearing structure on the aircraft, including the entire nose landing gear, Sun said.

Plane enthusiasts can already create small plastic planes with a computer and a 3D printer, but the technology could soon be extended to creating a real jet. 3D printers have already been used to create plane parts without the need for casting, forging, assembly or other traditional manufacturing processes.

According to Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, the C-919, China's first domestically-designed commercial aircraft, the J-15 and J-16 fighter jets, the J-20 stealth fighter and the next-generation J-31 fighter already all employ 3D printing technology.

On March 24, at 16th China Beijing International High-tech Expo, China's AVIC Heavy Machinery Co went away with the state technological invention award for the world's largest 3D printing titanium part for military aircraft.

The laser additive manufacturing technology is said to boast a significant advantage over traditional manufacturing methods. Aeronautical materials expert Wang Huamin says China only needs 55 days to "print out" the main windshield frame of a C-919 commercial jet, compared to at least two years and US$2 million for a European plane manufacturer.

Traditional jet manufacturing not only takes time but also wastes raw materials, with only 10% going into the final product, Wang said. US manufacturer Lockheed Martin requires 2.8 tonnes of titanium to build an F-22 fighter jet, but only 144kg of titanium will end up in the plane itself, he added.

Wang says China's large-scale 3D printing technology has already surpassed the United States, partly because many American companies do not yet take the technology seriously.

Investing in a South African solar project: Google

Google Blog, Thursday, May 30, 2013

As we search for investments that can help speed up the adoption of renewable energy, we’ve been looking beyond the U.S. and Europe to parts of the world where our investments can have an even greater impact. We’ve just closed our first investment in Africa: $12 million USD (103 million Rand) investment in the Jasper Power Project, a 96 megawatt solar photovoltaic plant in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Upon completion, Jasper will be one of the largest solar installations on the continent, capable of generating enough electricity to power 30,000 South African homes. The project, developed and funded by SolarReserve, Intikon Energy and the Kensani Group, is also backed by Rand Merchant Bank, the Public Investment Corporation, Development Bank of South Africa and the PEACE Humansrus Trust.

View Jasper Power Project in a larger map
The Jasper Power Project is located in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, near Postmasburg

When we consider investing in a renewable energy project, we focus on two key factors. First, we only pursue investments that we believe make financial sense. South Africa’s strong resources and supportive policies for renewable energy make it an attractive place to invest—which is why it had the highest growth in clean energy investment in the world last year. Second, we look for projects that have transformative potential—that is, projects that will bolster the growth of the renewable energy industry and move the world closer to a clean energy future. The Jasper Power Project is one of those transformative opportunities. To explain why, perhaps some background would be helpful.

Back in 2008, South Africa experienced a severe energy shortage, which resulted in blackouts throughout the country and slowed down economic growth. Since then the South African government has been actively supporting the growth of new sources of electricity to power the nation. While today South Africa is primarily dependent on fossil fuels, there’s lots of potential for renewable energy—it’s a country blessed with abundant wind and solar resources—and the government has set an ambitious goal of generating 18 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy by 2030 (as a comparison, the entire South African grid is currently 44 GW).

To meet this goal, the South African government has established the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP). Through the program, renewable energy projects compete on the basis of cost and contribution to the local economy to be awarded a contract with Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned energy utility. Jasper and the other projects being developed through the REIPPPP have the potential to transform the South African energy grid. And given South Africa’s position as an economic powerhouse in Africa, a greener grid in South Africa can set an example for the whole continent.

Once constructed, the project will use solar panels like these.

Just as compelling are the economic and social benefits that the project will bring to the local community. Jasper will create approximately 300 construction and 50 permanent jobs in a region experiencing high rates of unemployment, as well as providing rural development and education programs and setting aside a portion of total project revenues—amounting to approximately $26 million over the life of the project—for enterprise and socio-economic development. We appreciate how forward-thinking the South African government has been in designing the REIPPPP to encourage these kinds of local economic benefits.

Google has committed more than $1 billion to renewable energy investments and we continue to search for new opportunities. Our search has brought us from the U.S. to Europe and now to Africa. We’re excited to see where else it might lead.

Never-before-seen images of inside the atom are revealed after Dutch scientists 'do the impossible' and photograph inside a hydrogen particle

  • Used lasers and powerful microscope to take pictures in groundbreaking experiment
  • Fragile particles inside atom previously thought too small to pin down
  • Could kickstart the development of quantum electronics systems

Daily Mail, Sara Smyth, 27 May 2013

The inside of an atom has been photographed for the first time in a groundbreaking experiment that could lead to radical new forms of electronics, and help our understanding of the universe's most basic building blocks.

Scientists in the Netherlands used a laser and a microscope to look inside a hydrogen particle.

These kind of images have never before been taken because all previous experiments have destroyed the particles they are attempting to capture.

Revolutionary: These images of the inside of an atom were created by firing
different lasers at them. The varying colours show the different density of particles
inside the atom

Scientists in Amsterdam were able to see the contents of the atom by using a special lens that magnifies images up to 20,000 times, creating a 'quantum microscope'.

The experiment has pushed the limits of what quantum physicists thought possible, and could help researchers design ultra fast electronics systems in the future.

Instead of having the ability to describe where a particle is, quantum theory provides a description of its whereabouts called a wave function, which is a mathematical way of describing how they behave in both space and time.

Wave functions work like sound waves, except that whereas the mathematical description of a sound wave defines the motion of molecules in air at a particular place, a wave function describes the probability of finding the particle.

Physicists can theoretically predict what a wave function is like, but measuring a wave function is very hard because they are extremely fragile.

How they did it: The team first fired two lasers at hydrogen atoms inside a chamber,
kicking off electrons at speeds and directions that depended on their underlying wave
functions. A strong electric field inside the chamber guided the electrons through a
lens and onto a detector which displays the electron distribution on a phosphorescent
screen as light and dark rings, which the team photographed using a high-resolution
digital camera.

Most attempts to directly observe wave functions actually destroy them in a process called collapse.

So to experimentally measure the properties of a wave function requires researchers to reconstruct it from many separate destructive measurements on identically prepared atoms or molecules.

Physicists at AMOLF, a lab of the Netherlands' Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) in Amsterdam, demonstrated a new nondestructive approach in a paper published in Physical Review Letters.

Building on a 1981 proposal by three Russian theorists and more recent work that brought that proposal into the realm of possibility, the team first fired two lasers at hydrogen atoms inside a chamber, kicking off electrons at speeds and directions that depended on their underlying wave functions.

The original atom-splitter: Ernest Rutherford is known as the father of nuclear
physics, after he successfully split the atom. The New Zealander was called the
'second Newton' by Albert Einstein

A strong electric field inside the chamber guided the electrons to positions on a planar detector that depended on their initial velocities rather than on their initial positions.

So the distribution of electrons striking the detector matched the wave function the electrons had at the moment they left their hydrogen nuclei behind.

The apparatus displays the electron distribution on a phosphorescent screen as light and dark rings, which the team photographed using a high-resolution digital camera.

Team leader Aneta Stodolna said: ‘We are really happy with our results’.

The research was done by physicists at AMOLF, a lab of the Netherlands' Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter.

Jeff Lundeen, a physicist at the University of Ottawa in Canada said: ‘It's an interesting experiment, mostly because it's investigating hydrogen.’Hydrogen makes up three-quarters of the universe.

Mr Lundeen said the team ‘basically developed a new technique’ that could be ‘a very useful tool’ for scientists.

'A tool that directly magnifies the microscopic state of a quantum particle onto the laboratory scale could, potentially, render some quantum properties directly perceptible.

'More practically, such a quantum microscope could aid development of atomic and molecular-scale technologies.'

Scientific greats: Albert Einstein (left) and Issac Newton (right) are credited
with furthering the study of atoms with their research

A laser was used on the particles inside the atom multiple times, so their activity could be traced with a powerful microscope.

The hydrogen atom was chosen for the experiment because of its basic structure.

Taking a picture of it is simpler than any other substance. The team has started experimenting on particles of helium.

It is not known if the process will be a success with the more complex substance.

“… Quantum Definition

It is difficult to know how to begin and difficult to know how to explain this in a way that you will actually understand. So let us start with this. Your science believes at the moment that quantum physics has to do with the way small particles react to each other. These would be particles that are so small; they are even particles of light, molecules of DNA, and other products of the wave particle theory. These are so small, you have to see them under an electron microscope. This is what you call quantum mechanics and it's only being seen within the very small.

Here is a puzzle already. Did you know that light and other matter regularly changes from waves to particles? Did you know that light changes to a particle when it is being observed by a Human Being? Now, how can a mathematical system "sense" that it is being observed? Already you know that quantum energy might just be very different than anything you thought. What if it isn't physics at all? What if quantum energy is "the creator's fingerprint"? It would be physics and also have a consciousness. But then, perhaps that's just too strange? ….”

“ … Physicists say that electrons spin. They don't, and they can't. There's no surface on an electron, since they are energy. They don't spin, but instead have an electronic potential. Every single particle on this planet, everything you can see, all things in this Universe, are created with polarity. This is new information now. All things are created with polarity, and they're designed to be self-balancing. And because of the polarity of what you would call plus and minus, they move and try to balance themselves within a field - all things, both physical and other.

However, all polarities are prone to be biased by what I will call peer pressure. Electrons that carry (or spin with a polarity) of what you would call a certain kind of charge - we'll call it positive - are drawn to those that are negative so that they will null themselves out. They seek each other out to create the null of balance. They seek to be balanced, and if they are not, they are not happy. I use this word only to emphasize the condition of a particle of physics that does not find its balance. Even the unscientific can appreciate this.

But even with atoms, there are not always matched pairs of electrons, since there is no atomic rule that says that electrons will always be created in even numbers. So there will often be what I will call the odd one out and when that happens, the entire atom will then be charged positively or negatively, depending upon the odd one out. When this happens, this atom will seek out another atom, which has an odd one out of an opposite charge. That has a name: Magnetism. I've just explained magnetism. Now, science knows part of that already. What they have not realized yet, however, is that all things have a duality. They suspect it and there are theories that will show it soon enough, and I've given it to you today because it always has existed in someone's mind.

So from the very smallest to the very biggest, even the galaxy has duality. At the center of your galaxy, what you call the black hole, is a quantum push/pull engine, and I'm going to tell you in a minute why it's that way.

Here is a big question, and I will answer it right now. Why does everything have a polarity? Why would it be created this way, even down to the electron? The smallest thing, even to what you call the Higgs Bosen [God Particle] and the quarks, they all have polarity. There isn't a piece of nature that you're going to find that doesn't have polarity. Why? I will tell you why: Physicists will laugh. Not in ridicule, but in agreement. If it were not this way, the Universe would be a dull, boring place to be. Because, by creating a duality in every single particle, you create an active Universe that is self-balancing and is never at rest. If it were not this way, it would be static, unchanging, and non-creative. Therefore, without polarity, there would be no life. Life is created by having a duality, a polarity in atomic particles. Life is that which is necessary for the Universe to exist. There's no reason for physics without life - and you thought it was the other way around, didn't you? Life was an accident on one planet. Oh, how 3D of you! Life is the DESIGN..…”

“… The very physics of your galaxy is postured by what you do here. The astronomers can look into the cosmos and they will discover different physics in different galaxies. Could it be that there's something going on in the other galaxies like this one? I'm not going to answer that. ..."

“… By the way, what happens to the solar system when the magnetics shift? Now you start to see where astrology will begin to shift as well. There are those who will start to apply the quantum filter to astrology. It's happening now. What is your quantum sign? It's different than the three-dimensional sign. Oh, there'll come a day, dear ones, in science, where the scientists will be able to apply what I will call a quantum filter to alter what they see. This will be a filter developed for telescopes that involves a super-cooling of the filter itself. Astronomers will be able to look out into the cosmos and, for the first time, see quantum attributes.

The first thing they'll notice is two things in the center of the galaxy, not one. The next thing will be the colors around the Human Being. And science will start a whole new section called "The Study of the Human Auric Energy." All of these are coming.  …”

Consciousness; it's a science thing

I never expected a talk by a philosopher to be the most memorable TEDxCERN talk for me. But John Searle made it so

TEDxCERN was a lot of fun. The speakers were amazing, covering cosmology, cancer cures, underwater earthquakes, gender politics, ignoble bras, the Higgs boson (of course) and more. I recommend a trawl through them all here. You may even spot me waving my arms in the air along with the choirs of College International Ferney-Voltaire and International School Geneva, and will.i.am on skype if you so wish. Hiranya Pieris from UCL kicked the whole thing off with a great talk about Planck data and cosmology. The four TED Ed animations are also well worth a watch.

But to my amazement, the one talk which I remember most, a couple of weeks later, was by a philosopher. I am pretty skeptical about philosophers on the whole, but then I think John Searle might be too. He makes a bold claim for the science of consciousness

You care about science, philosophy, music, art, whatever. It's no good if you're a zombie, or in a coma. Consciousness is number one.

and he delivers, with a brilliant talk, with so many quotable bits that I give up. Just watch it.

And the rest. But not all at once, or your brain may explode.

"The Human Design” – Oct 18, 2010 (Kryon channeled by Lee Carroll)

“.. GAIA... More Than You Think

There's more. Now they're able to measure the magnetics of Earth on an hourly basis and have found something surprising. It shocked those who studied it when they found that the earth's magnetic field becomes stronger and weaker with the profound events of humanity. During the tsunami, the magnetics peaked. During that event that you call 9/11, the magnetics of the earth changed dramatically. The very hour the airplanes hit the towers, the magnetics of the planet changed. What could this mean? Is it possible that Human consciousness is so allied with Gaia that this could take place? Indeed, it is, and that's what the evidence says. What does that have to do with God? Everything, for it puts Humans together with all of creation in a "designed way."

Pretend for a moment you have the mind of God. How would you create Human Beings? Through billions of years, God has created a Universe that is built for life. Against all the odds of averages, you are here. Now if you are God, how are you going to build a Human Being? Would it be as an "accidental mammal" on the planet?

As a wise Human, you now understand that the Human body has intelligent DNA. All of the genes in the body, all of the stem cell information, even that which is Akashic in the past-life record, is stored as information in the body. Does that sound accidental or random? With the mind of God, how would you have done it? God included the essence of creation inside you. Now there is evidence, of course, that the very energy of Gaia is related to Human consciousness. So, what part are you (as God) going to give for the Human Being on Earth? Does the Human get anything else? The answer is yes. .. “

You now sit in a revolutionary change and some of you are aware it and feeling it. It is the shift of Human consciousness and it's shifting right into the quantum factor, since you are becoming more quantum in your consciousness... and it is becoming benevolent. That is why you're seeing this earth react the way it is.

You're starting to see those who will not allow the old systems. You will no longer have dictators. Citizens all over earth want control over lives. They don't want war. They want their families to be safe! They want peace and abundance. They want their grandchildren to have hope for a better life than they had. In preparation of the global March Against Monsanto, you are invited to watch our award-winning documentary Seeds of Death free.

The leaders of Big Agriculture--Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta--are determined that world's populations remain ignorant about the serious health and environmental risks of genetically modified crops and industrial agriculture. Deep layers of deception and corruption underlie both the science favoring GMOs and the corporations and governments supporting them.

This award-winning documentary, Seeds of Death, exposes the lies about GMOs and pulls back the curtains to witness our planet's future if Big Agriculture's new green revolution becomes our dominant food supply.

A Question and Answer fact sheet deconstructing Monsanto's GM claims and Big Agriculture's propaganda to accompany the film is available online.

New subsidies for green cars in China

Want China Times, Xinhua 2013-05-24

A new subsidy policy is intended to promote the use of energy-saving automobiles, according to a Thursday report by the China Securities Journal.

The previous policy, which expired at the end of last year, provided a subsidy of 50,000 yuan (US$8,150) to automakers for every hybrid vehicle sold, while 60,000 yuan (US$9,800) was provided for every electric vehicle sold.

Miao Wei, head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said in March that a new subsidy policy for energy-saving cars will be issued in the first half of 2013.

The China Securities Journal report cited an MIIT official as saying that the policy will need final authorization from the State Council, or China's cabinet, after several government departments pass a draft version of the policy.

Li Weili, chief of the manufacturing division under the State Information Center, said the new policy is expected to last until 2015 at least. He said detailed provisions regarding subsidies for electric cars will likely be implemented before the end of June 2013, although provisions related to hybrid vehicles may come out later.

Standards for the evaluation of hybrid vehicle energy consumption have yet to be created, which has postponed the creation of special subsidies for hybrid vehicles based on how much fuel they save, Li added.

The MIIT has shown a tendency to support hybrid vehicles with lower energy consumption, which has led many automakers to boost research and development for such vehicles.

Ling Tianjun, chief engineer of green vehicles at the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), one of China's four largest auto groups, said SAIC has started selling hybrid cars at lower prices with the help of subsidies totaling over 100,000 yuan (US$16,300).

Chery, one of China's largest private automotive enterprises, has decided to spend more on electric vehicle research, the report said.

The MIIT, together with Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Science and Technology, announced a program to encourage innovation in green vehicle technology in September 2012.

But Duan Zhihui, Chery's chief hybrid vehicle engineer, said the three-year time limit for the new subsidies may cause auto companies to rush their research and development in order to avoid missing the opportunity to receive the subsidies.

White tiger's coat down to one change in a gene

BBC News, 23 May 2013

Records of sightings in the wild on the Indian
sub-continent date back to the 1500s
Chinese scientists have acquired new insights into how white tigers get their colouration.

The researchers have traced the cause to a single change in a gene known to drive pigmentation in a host of animals, including humans.

White tigers are a rare variant of the customary orange Bengal sub-species.

Today, they are found exclusively in captive programmes where the limited numbers are interbred to maintain the distinctive fur colour.

Shu-Jin Luo of Peking University and colleagues report in the journal Cell Biology how they investigated the genetics of a family of tigers living in Chimelong Safari Park in Panyu, Guangzhou Province.

This ambush of tigers included both white and orange individuals.

The study zeroed in on the pigment gene called SLC45A2, which has long been associated with the light colouration seen in some human populations, and in a range of other animals including horses, chickens, and fish.

The team identified a small alteration in the white-tiger version of SLC45A2 that appears to inhibit the production of red and yellow pigments. This change has no effect on the generation of black pigment - explaining why the whites still have their characteristic dark stripes.

A number of the white tigers found in zoos have health issues, such as eyesight problems and some deformities.

However, Luo and colleagues say these deficiencies are a consequence of inbreeding by humans and that the white coats are in no way indicative of a more general weakness in the Bengal variant.

Establishing this fact means that re-introducing them to the wild under a carefully managed conservation programme might be worth considering.

"The last known free-ranging white tiger was shot in 1958, before which sporadic sightings were made in India," the researchers write.

"Reasons for the extinction of wild white tigers were likely the same as those accounting for the dramatic decline in wild tigers in general: uncontrolled trophy hunting, habitat loss, and habitat fragmentation.

"However, the fact that many white tigers captured or shot in the wild were mature adults suggests that a white tiger in the wild is able to survive without its tness being substantially compromised."

Roll over Einstein: meet Weinstein

What are we to make of a man who left academia more than two decades ago but claims to have solved some of the most intractable problems in physics?

There are a lot of open questions in modern physics.

Most of the universe is missing, for example. The atoms we know about account for less than 5% of the mass of the observable universe - the rest is dark matter (around 25% of the mass of the universe) and dark energy (a whopping 70%). No one knows what either of these things actually is.

At the subatomic scale, we know there are three families of fundamental particles - called "generations" - and each one contains two quarks, a neutrino and a negatively charged particle (the lightest being the electron). But why are there three generations in the first place?

And the big one: why do the two pillars of 20th century physics, quantum mechanics and Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, not agree with each other?

Solving these problems, the last one in particular, has been the goal of many generations of scientists. A final theory of nature would have to explain all of the outstanding questions and, though many (including Albert Einstein himself) have tried, no one has come close to an answer.

At 4pm on Thursday at the University of Oxford, the latest attempt to fill the biggest holes in physics will be presented in a lecture at the prestigious Clarendon Laboratory. The man behind the ideas, Eric Weinstein, is not someone you might normally expect to be probing the very edge of theoretical physics. After a PhD in mathematical physics at Harvard University, he left academia more than two decades ago (via stints at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem) and is now an economist and consultant at the Natron Group, a New York hedge fund.

He may have an impressive CV, but Weinstein is in no way part of the academic physics community. He will speak in Oxford at the invitation of Marcus du Sautoy, one of the university's most famous and accomplished mathematicians who also holds Richard Dawkins's former academic position as the Simonyi professor of thepublic understanding of science. Weinstein and du Sautoy met as postdoctoral mathematics students at the Hebrew University in the 1990s.

Weinstein has been working on his ideas to unify physics for more than two decades, but he only shared them two years ago with du Sautoy, who since then has been keenly studying the mathematics. "I get so many letters and emails to me explaining big theories of the universe and I don't take them all so seriously," says du Sautoy. "Eric's been telling me the story of his ideas and what I immediately found appealing about them was the naturalness of them. You don't have to put in extraneous things. There's a beauty about it that gives you a feeling that there's a truth about it."

In Weinstein's theory, called Geometric Unity, he proposes a 14-dimensional "observerse" that has our familiar four-dimensional space-time continuum embedded within it. The interaction between the two is something like the relationship between the people in the stands and those on the pitch at a football stadium - the spectators (limited to their four-dimensional space) can see and are affected by the action on the pitch (representing all 14 dimensions) but are somewhat removed from it and cannot detect every detail.

In the mathematics of the observerse there is no missing dark matter. Weinstein explains that the mass only seems to be missing because of the "handedness" of our current understanding of the universe, the Standard Model of particle physics. This is the most complete mathematical description physicists have of the universe at the quantum level and describes 12 particles of matter (called fermions) and 12 force-carrying particles (called bosons), in addition to their antimatter partners.

"The Standard Model relies on a fundamental asymmetry between left-handedness and right-handedness in order to keep the observed particles very light in the mass scale of the universe," says Weinstein.

He says his theory does not have the asymmetry associated with the Standard Model. The reason we cannot easily detect the dark matter is that, in the observerse, when space is relatively flat, the left-handed and right-handed spaces would become disconnected and the two sides would not be aware of each other.

"Imagine a neurological patient whose left and right hand sides were not aware of each other," he says. "You'd have a situation where each side felt itself to be asymmetric, even though anyone looking at both halves together would see a symmetric individual whose left hand counterbalanced the right."

He proposes that dark energy is a type of fundamental force that could sit alongside gravity, electromagnetism, the strong and weak nuclear forces. This force pushes space apart and its strength is variable throughout the universe. Furthermore, Weinstein's theory predicts the existence of more than 150 new subatomic particles, most of them with exotic properties (such as electric charges that are greater than one, which is the maximum seen in nature at present).

Radical ideas that claim to solve all the problems of physics - so-called final theories of everything - have come and gone countless times in the history of physics and many are notable for emerging from outside the traditional world of university physics departments. In 2007, physicist and surfer Garrett Lisi made headlines when he claimed to have found a way to unify physics. Lisi's ideas never took off, because his theories did not make enough predictions that could be tested in experiments, the hallmark of a good scientific idea.

Weinstein has not shared his ideas too widely yet. Scientists who have seen some of the details similarly agree that there is some elegant mathematics in his 14-dimensional observerse. But it takes more than elegant mathematics to make a good scientific theory.

The current leading candidate to unify the fundamental forces of nature is M theory (also known as superstring theory), which proposes that all the particles we know of are actually, at the tiniest scale, vibrating loops of energy. Despite decades of effort from the cream of the theoretical physics community, however, M theory struggles to make any experimentally testable predictions.

David Kaplan, a particle theorist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, has seen and discussed some of Weinstein's ideas with him. On the plus side, Kaplan says it is "phenomenal" that someone coming from outside academia could put together something so coherent. "There are many people who come from the outside with crazy theories, but they are not serious. Eric is serious."

But he says the theory is incomplete and should have spent more time being critiqued by academics before receiving any wider public attention. "What I would encourage him to do is modest things and take steps and commit to a physical manifestation of his theory – to say 'here is a set of instructions and a set of equations, do this calculation and you can make the following predictions.' And then see if his theory matches with the real world or not. He doesn't have enough of a case. What I'd like him to do is to keep working."

Edward Frenkel, a mathematician at the University of California, Berkeley, has been discussing Weinstein's ideas with him for the past year. "I think that both mathematicians and physicists should take Eric's ideas very seriously," he says. "Even independently of their physical implications, I believe that Eric's insights will be useful to mathematicians, because he points to some structures which have not been studied before, as far as I know. As for the physical implications, it is quite possible that this new framework will lead to new answers to the big questions, after necessary work is done to make precise predictions which can be tested experimentally."

Jim al-Khalili, a nuclear physicist at the University of Surrey who has seen a summary of Weinstein's ideas (but not the maths) is sceptical. He says Weinstein will need to do a "heck of a lot of convincing" if he wants physicists to take his ideas seriously. "My main concern with Weinstein's claims is that they are simply too grand - too sweeping. It would be one thing if he argued for some modest prediction that his theory was making, and importantly one that could be tested experimentally, or that it explained a phenomenon or mechanism that other theories have failed to do, but he makes the mistake of claiming too much for it."

Until Weinstein produces a paper, physicists will remain unconvinced and, crucially, unable to properly assess the claims he is making. His lecture at Oxford today will give more mathematical details and Weinstein plans to put a manuscript on the Arxiv preprint server - a website where scientists often publish early drafts of their work, many of which subsequently get published in peer-reviewed journals.

Du Sautoy defends the unorthodox way that Weinstein's ideas have filtered into the world and expects corrections and updates to become apparent. "We live in an age where everything has to be sealed and delivered and complete when it's delivered and complete when it meets a journal and, in fact, that's not how science is done," he says.

Einstein's theory of general relativity, he added, was not a finished product when first presented, taking a decade of evolution and discussion to get into its final form.

"I'm trying to promote, perhaps, a new way of doing science. Let's start with really big ideas, let's be brave and let's have a discussion," says du Sautoy. "Science is very much an evolutionary process and [Weinstein's] is such a wide-ranging theory and involves such a wide area of mathematics and physics, this is an invitation to say, 'This is speculative and it's claiming a lot so let's see where it can go.'"

Whatever happens, says Frenkel, Weinstein is an example of how science might change in future. "I find it remarkable that Eric was able to come up with such beautiful and original ideas even though he has been out of academia for so long (doing wonderful things in other areas, such as economics and finance). In the past week we have learned about an outstanding result about prime numbers proved by a mathematician who had been virtually unknown, and now comes Eric's lecture at Oxford.

"I think this represents a new trend. It used to be that one had to be part of an academic hub, such as Harvard or Oxford, to produce cutting-edge research. But not any more. Part of the reason is the wide availability of scientific information on the internet. And I think this is a wonderful development, which should be supported.

"I also see two lessons coming from this. The first is for the young generation: with passion and perseverance there is no limit to what you can do, even in high-end theoretical science. The other lesson is for me and my colleagues in academia – and I say this as someone who on most days takes an elevator to his office in an Ivory Tower, as it were – we should be more inclusive and more open to ideas which come from outside the standard channels of academia, and we'll be better off for it."

"... There's more. I just took you on a trip to the center of a simple atom and told you that there's far more there for you to see than how it appears in 4D. Let me give you a prediction: Scientists will begin to understand this on a grander scale as they continue to look at the Universe. There's something missing within the energy measurement of "everything that should be there" for the motion and scope to exist as you see it. So what's missing? Why can't you see it? Already scientists are postulating the possibility of dark matter. This would be matter you can't see, but which must exist to enable the energy equation to be balanced. No one has said anything about interdimensionality yet, but they will. They have to, for the elegance of the math eventually will show them very clearly that perhaps what's going on in the Universe is interdimensional in its scope. What's missing in their energy computations is very real interdimensional matter.

Who said that the cosmic lattice was linear? Who said that the energy that you can't see follows the same paradigm as what you can see? Oh, before this channel is over, I'm going to give you some puzzles. So here's another prediction: Science will begin to look for missing dimensions to explain missing energy! And it's about time. And that's the way of it. So it's time to reveal the shape of the Universe, and the push/pull action within dimensional shifts that cause your Universe to do what it does, and show you what it does. Many of the things that you continually observe are hints of it, but they're misinterpreted.

In four dimensions, your physics makes a lot of sense. When you step out of 4D and become interdimensional, however, all those logical rules of physics change. We even told you the last time we were here that when you get small enough, the laws of basic physics changes, too. It also changes when you get very large. It also changes with time frames. Stay with me here, for this will be simplified in a moment. ...."

E=MC2 Infinity (MC2 to infinity [∞])

"... That one little symbol is rather important, is it not? For it speaks to the continuity and the infinite nature of creation and the universe. And here I had tried to squeeze it into a manageable form, when it was never intended to be so small.

So, I come this day in a very public forum to share that, not so much with light-workers, but this is the forum I am given to speak to the scientists, and so I take it and I give this to them..."
